Flaring is a controlled combustion process for release of wastage gas. At the tip of the flare stack, gas will be mixed with an adequate amount of oxygen to sustain the flame. This has to be done in a controlled pressure, otherwise, the flame will die out or burns explosively. Adequate oxygen supply is also a factor here if gas does not mix with sufficient oxygen, the mixture will be released with smoke which is harmful to the environment. Piping ensures that flame is retained in a healthy manner with adequate pressure and oxygen supply.
